چکیده

Radiotherapy treament planning implies to delineate on the CT image of the patient the organs at risk where the dose has to be controlled. To avoid manual contouring that is tedious and prone to inter-expert variability, algorithms able to provide these delineations automatically can be helpful for the clinicians. This paper presents a multiatlas based segmentation procedure to segment the parotid glands in the context of the Head And Neck Auto-Segmentation Challenge 2010. In this procedure, the images of the training database and their manual segmentations are first resampled on the query image through the intermediate coordinate system of an average atlas. Then, a voxel-wise combination strategy based on a weighted majority vote rule is performed to estimate the segmentation of the query. For each voxel, the weight assigned to a given resampled segmentation reflects the local degree of similarity between the corresponding resampled image and the query image. We applied our method with the database provided by the workshop.

Multi-atlas-based Segmentation of the Parotid Glands of MR Images in Patients Following Head-and-neck Cancer Radiotherapy.

Xerostomia (dry mouth), resulting from radiation damage to the parotid glands, is one of the most common and distressing side effects of head-and-neck cancer radiotherapy. Recent MRI studies have demonstrated that the volume reduction of parotid glands is an important indicator for radiation damage and xerostomia. In the clinic, parotid-volume evaluation is exclusively based on physicians' manu...

Using Frankenstein's Creature Paradigm to Build a Patient Specific Atlas

Conformal radiotherapy planning needs accurate delineations of the critical structures. Atlas-based segmentation has been shown to be very efficient to delineate brain structures. It would therefore be very interesting to develop an atlas for the head and neck region where 7% of the cancers arise. However, the construction of an atlas in this region is very difficult due to the high variability...

Automatic Segmentation of Parotids in Head and Neck CT Images using Multi-atlas Fusion

Treatment planning for high precision radiotherapy of head and neck (H&N) cancer patients requires accurate delineation of many critical structures. Manual contouring is tedious and often suffers from large interand intra-rater variability. To reduce manual labor, we have previously developed a fully automated, atlas-based method for H&N CT image segmentation [1, 2]. In this work, we adapt the ...

The feasibility of atlas‐based automatic segmentation of MRI for H&N radiotherapy planning

Atlas-based autosegmentation is an established tool for segmenting structures for CT-planned head and neck radiotherapy. MRI is being increasingly integrated into the planning process. The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility of MRI-based, atlas-based autosegmentation for organs at risk (OAR) and lymph node levels, and to compare the segmentation accuracy with CT-based autosegmentatio...

Construction of Patient Specific Atlases from Locally Most Similar Anatomical Pieces

Radiotherapy planning requires accurate delineations of the critical structures. To avoid manual contouring, atlas-based segmentation can be used to get automatic delineations. However, the results strongly depend on the chosen atlas, especially for the head and neck region where the anatomical variability is high. To address this problem, atlases adapted to the patient's anatomy may allow for ...
